Lotus

by Stephanie Suesan Smith, Ph.D. on July 6, 2010

This lotus (Nymphaea lotus) was photographed at the Dallas Arboretium.  In Buddhism, the lotus symbolizes the progress of men’s enlightenment.  They start in the mud of materialism, grow through the waters of experience, and emerge into the bright sunshine of enlightenment.  This was photographed in the fall, so it was not in flower.
