In 1956, the Hungarians revolted against Soviet rule and in return, the Soviets pretty much leveled the country to the ground. Almost all the buildings I saw on my trip to there in 2002 dated from the early 1960s. They were ugly, boxy, and very obviously Soviet. This fortress is in Guyula, on the border between Hungary and Romania. Supposedly, it is the only fortress to survive the Soviets. The locals call it a castle, although it is really just the walls and watchtowers of a small garrison, with no interior left.
