Black Widow Spider

by Stephanie Suesan Smith, Ph.D. on December 27, 2010

People are frequently afraid any black spider is poisonous.  Furry black spiders may bite, and it will hurt, but they are not poisonous to humans.  This shiny black widow with a red hourglass on her abdomen is poisonous, however.  Often hiding in old outhouses under the seats, they bit people where you would expect in that situation and caused a real problem.  This one inhabited my tack shed years ago.

Its funny when you make a survey, one of the scariest thing on earth are spiders. Maybe its the wrong perception that we gained when we were kids. But the black-widow spider’s venom can be fatal for kids and elders, so I guess the fear is warranted.
